Our Biosciences division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join their team and focus on coastal hydrobiogeochemistry and synchrotron applications. As a postdoctoral appointee, you will:

  • Develop and apply biogeochemistry and synchrotron-based techniques to study dynamics of biogeochemical mechanisms within coastal systems.
  • Develop and apply microcosm-based approaches in the laboratory to test impact of multiple environmental conditions.
  • Participate in experiments at Department of Energy (DOE) national user synchrotron facilities.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary discussions aimed at the design of new experiments.
  • Report on results of research including publishing scholarly papers in scientific journals, giving presentations at conferences, meetings, and seminars.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports and proposals required by funding agencies to obtain and continue funding support.
  • Disseminate results of the research in the form of peer reviewed publications and presentations at conferences.
  • Work onsite in Lemont, Illinois 3+ days per week.

Position Requirements

  • Completed PhD (or soon-to-be-completed) within the last 0-5 years in Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Chemistry, Biogeochemistry, or Soil Science.
  • Experience with the application of synchrotron-based techniques to problems in one of these areas listed above.
  • Knowledge and skills in either Biogeochemistry or synchrotron science, demonstrated work in soil-based systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of biogeochemical processes important in environmental science.
  • Skill conceiving experiments and studies to develop new knowledge in environmental biogeochemistry.
  • Skill developing laboratory procedures and protocols for new experiments designed to test scientific hypotheses.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Knowledge of potential applications of x-ray techniques to the outstanding problems in environmental science.
  • Skill in diplomatic interactions with others, including individuals having a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Effective communication and collaborative skills and working as part of a team.
  • Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
